China: The Zhuai Project: The Pearl Sea (2008)
“Cultured moments … pearls in the sea of being in time “
In recognition of UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (2001) RWD accepted an invitation from United International College, Zhuhai, China, to provide a choreographic residency (June 3–July 28, 2008) and new evening-length dance work. The residency brought Chinese movement artists, musicians, decor and costume designers from the Zhuhai and Hong Kong regions together with American dancers from Mr. Wood’s New York based company. The work culminated in the world première of “The Pearl Sea” – a celebratory opening to the international conference, Movement and Dance in Global Perspective, hosted by Hong Kong Baptist University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and United International College of Beijing Normal University, China.
Czech Republic: The Duncan Centre Conservatory, Prague (2007)
This Eastern European residency was specifically designed to address the current needs of young Czech dance-makers, as identified and expressed by the Directors of the Duncan Centre, Mme. Eva Blazickova and Mme Libuse Svabova. The goal was to broaden perspectives and develop intellectual confidence in their own approaches and abilities. Rather than imposing American ideas and modes of working, we sought to identify and encourage uniquely Czech modes of dance construction, communication and performance through the exploration of personal, historical and cultural resources.
Italy: The Florence Dance Company: siLenCe (2005)
This artistic residency involved the development and performance of Robert Wood’s evening-length work siLenCe. An international co-production by Robert Wood Dance and The Florence Dance Company, the work featured dancers from Italy, France, Armenia, Spain, Taiwan and the USA. This work premiered at the Florence Dance Festival, Teatro Goldini Theater, Firenze, December.
Palestine: El Funoun: Haifa, Beirut, and Beyond (1998-2000)
